Eligibility
- Clear connection to family medicine in an academic medical center or an academic affiliated health system.
- At least 3 years of leadership experience in a position where you have had some responsibility managing personnel and budget and strategic direction
Program Elements and Schedule
The ADFM LEADS Fellowship is a year-long program (starting and ending in February at the ADFM Annual Conference). The program is structured around the ADFM leadership competencies, highlights strategic career planning, and is designed to be cohort-responsive though some content is included annually. Some examples of specific topics that may be covered include:
- Leadership pathways for self and mentees (i.e. knowledge of the different career options available, see CAFM leadership materials)
- Diversity and inclusion; anti-racism; explicitly acknowledge minority tax, sponsorship, allyship
- Self-promotion
- Survival skills vs day-to-day knowledge
- Systems thinking
- Change agency and management
- Teaming and leadership; leadership styles
- Writing, communication, and negotiation skills
- Advocacy skills (legislative and local/institutional)
- Giving and receiving feedback with a formal peer evaluation from other fellows
The timeline for the 2027-2028 cohort year is:
- Weekly meetings on Wednesdays at 10am PT/ 12pm CT/1pm ET (Starting in March 2027)
- February 22-26, 2027 | ADFM Annual Conference & LEADS Workshop | Salt Lake City, UT
- July 15-17, 2027 | LEADS Summer Workshop | Denver, CO
- November 13-17, 2027 | LEADS Workshop in conjunction with NAPCRG Annual Meeting | Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
- February 14-18, 2028 | ADFM Annual Conference & LEADS Workshop | Austin, TX

Program Cost and Commitments
The cost of participation in the ADFM LEADS Fellowship in 2027 is $12,000*. This fee covers all materials and expenses for LEADS Program sessions. It also covers the registration fees for the two ADFM Annual Conferences attended by LEADS Fellows. This does not include additional travel, lodging and some meal fees.
Travel expenses and costs associated with NAPCRG Annual Meeting attendance are the responsibility of the fellow and/or their supporting department.
*The program cost can be separated into two separate payments at the request of the department.

Position effort: 4 hours/week + 4 in person workshops per cohort year
Location: remote
Background: The ADFM LEADS (Leadership Education for Academic Development and Success) Fellowship Program provides interactive training, tools, and experiential learning for those aspiring to senior leadership positions in academic or other health systems. The program has an emphasis on strategic career planning and features a cohort-responsive curriculum structured around the Leadership Competencies for Family Medicine Department Chairs and Senior Leaders, which we have found fit for other leadership roles as well.
We are seeking 1 Additional Learning Community Faculty Advisor to work with the 2027-2028 cohort.
This individual will be someone with at least 5 years in a senior leadership position (department chair level or above) of an academic department of family medicine or academic health systems leader.
RESPONSIBILITIES
In collaboration with the ADFM staff supporting the LEADS program, the Faculty Advisors will:

Attend weekly check-ins with the fellows (Wednesdays, 1-2 pm ET) and provide facilitation of discussion sections, journal clubs, and project check-ins for your learning community group during these meetings.

Help plan fellowship curriculum and provide input on the overall curricular structure, including but not limited to:

Weekly meetings, including journal clubs and webinars

In person and virtual workshops

Progress of fellow projects and other assignments

Periodically review program goals and fellows’ areas of competencies to ensure weakness are addressed

Attend the four in-person workshops.

Attend monthly check-ins with the program director and staff.

Review readings and any materials assigned to the fellows.

Provide coaching to fellows on their fellowship objectives and LEADS projects throughout the year (focusing on the process, what they learned and gained as leadership development) and helping them prepare for their “ignite” talks sharing their projects during the ADFM conference at the end of the fellowship year. This includes:

Meet with the fellows mid-point through their fellowship and put together a mid-year report card to be shared with the fellow. Advisors are not expected to meet with each individual on a regular basis but may do so on an ad-hoc basis as needed beyond the mid-point check-in.

Outreach to any speakers/outside entities who need to be recruited for participation with LEADS fellows

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires travel throughout the year, specifically to the ADFM conference in February and the LEADS workshops in July and November.
